In a recent election held on September 30, Chief Jennifer Constant emerged as the newly elected leader of Mattagami First Nation, continuing a longstanding tradition of leadership within her family. Chief Constant, who has dedicated over two decades to various roles within her community and regional First Nation issues, expressed her commitment to promoting and advocating for First Nation objectives and initiatives. The elected council members for the upcoming term include Devin Naveau, Cindy McKay, Dereck McKay, Janelle Golinowski, Sue Prince, and Kourtney Baulne. Notably, this election marks the implementation of a new election code developed by the community, providing the chief and council with a four-year mandate, a departure from the previous two-year terms under the Indian Act.

Chief Constant’s family has a rich history of leadership in Mattagami First Nation, with her mother, uncle, grandfather, and great-grandfather all having served as chiefs in the past. The community, known for its progressive outlook, previously elected the first all-woman chief and council in 1962, emphasizing its commitment to diverse representation. The swearing-in ceremony for the new chief and council is scheduled for October 18, marking a significant moment in Mattagami First Nation’s governance and community history.
